Crime Prevention Programs

Annual National Night Out

The department hosts the Annual National Night Out (NNO) program with the Grinnell Optimist Club. NNO is a police and community partnership that is designed to:
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • Generate support for and participation in anti-crime programs
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
Pat Hatting and Officer Mike Dickenson are the co-chairs of this event.

Annual Shop with a Cop

We hold the Annual Shop with a Cop program with Wal-Mart and the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce as sponsors. Local citizens have helped coordinate community members to donate over $4,000 annually to this cause.

The Grinnell Middle School and Galaxy Youth Center staff also assist. This program helps deserving children enjoy their holidays and gives officers and children an opportunity to spend time together, which fosters relationships that will last a long time.

Citizen's Police Academy

This eight-week program is designed primarily for the community to better understand how their Police Department functions. The attendees learn many facets of law enforcement duties, from basic patrol to firearms to criminal investigations.

We are currently accepting applications for the CPA Spring program which begins on March 7, 2017. Classes will meet every Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Please click on the provided link or stop by the Grinnell Police Department for an application.
