Operation ReLeaf is a program to help Alliant Energy customers save energy in their homes using trees to provide shade during the summer and windbreaks during the winter. This year's program is provided by a partnership with Alliant Energy, Iowa DNR Forestry Bureau, and the City of Grinnell and is an opportunity for area residents to purchase trees that retail between $65.00 and $125.00 for only $25.00.
For maximum energy efficiency, large-growing shade trees should be planted within 30 feet of the west and east of your home. Low growing trees should be planted within 20 feet of your home, and can be used to shade air-conditioners. Evergreens should be planted as a windbreak on the north and west side of your home. Before placing an order, it is highly recommended to use the iTree design tools, which uses Google Earth to show you where the best placement for your tree to reduce energy usage.
To order a tree, download the application, complete, print, and mail it to the City of Grinnell (927 4th Avenue) with your check to the City of Grinnell. You may order up to two trees and are encouraged to order early to insure you get your first choice of species. Even if you don't live in Poweshiek County, you are welcome to purchase a tree at the event as long as you are an Alliant Energy customer. Orders must be submitted prior to Sept. 11, 2015. Species may sell out prior to that date.
Because of the spread of Emerald Ash Borer in Iowa, it is recommended to plant a replacement tree within 30 feet of any existing ash tree you do not intend to treat. Be sure to plant a diverse mix of trees on your property and in your neighborhood to reduce the possibility of losing a large number of trees due to forest health threats.

The trees will be three to ten feet tall and are container-grown.
Because research shows that most trees are planted improperly, even by professionals, a short tree planting and care workshop will be held at the event. The workshop will take 30 minutes and cover the basic mistakes most people make. To register, send an email to email@example.com and let her know you would like to attend the Grinnell workshop.
If you can't attend the workshop, or have any questions about tree planting and care, go to Iowa Grove Resources for videos, brochures, planting guides, and other urban tree information.
