The city of Grinnell Building & Planning department reminds residents & business owners to obtain a permit before starting most building improvement projects. Permits are required for roofing, siding, building additions, accessory buildings, fences, and more. Permits are not needed for the following:

• Nonstructural alterations not exceeding $500.00
• Paneling
• Cabinet Replacements
• Door and Window Replacements; if replaced with an equal size
• Storm window replacement
• Screen Replacement
• Railing Replacement
• Repairs of Porches
• Ordinary Maintenance work
• Painting and floor coverings
