[ARCHIVED] Rusty Water Possible During Flushing

City crews will begin flushing water mains on Monday, Sept. 19th, 2016 and some rusty water is likely to occur throughout the City. Flushing will start at 12:01 a.m. on the 19th and continue until finished.

The Water Treatment Plant will be the base of operations. City crews will flush hydrants in the southwest section of the City first, then in the northwest, southeast and ending in the northeast section of the City. The purpose of the project is to remove accumulations of rust and sediment from the City’s water mains.

Although flushing will be occurring in specific areas, red water problems will probably show up in all areas of the City. When hydrants are flushed it creates unusual flow patterns pulling water from different directions and picking up the rust and sediments in the process.

There is no known danger in human consumption of rusty water, but it can discolor clothes in laundry. Domestic products are not usually effective in removing this stain but a material, which is usually effective in removing stain, is available at the Water Treatment Plant or the City Offices. Persons doing laundry are encouraged to check the water before beginning the washing cycle.
