On December 3, dedications will take place to honor the sacrifices of Officers Warren Binegar and Ralph Ogan. At approximately 1:15 p.m. the Highway 6 underpass, located adjacent to Iowa Valley Commmunity College, will be dedicated as the "Officer Warren Binegar Safe Route." Officer Binegar passed away on August 29, 1948 after being struck by a vehicle, at the scene of a motor vehicle crash east of Grinnell on Highway 6, the day prior.
Immediately following Officer Binegar's dedication, attendees will proceed to Ogan Avenue and East Street where Ogan Avenue will be dedicated as the "Officer Ralph Ogan Memorial Highway." Ogan Avenue is named after Officer Ogan, but many in the Grinnell community are not aware of the significance of the street name. Officer Ogan was shot and killed on Main Street during the early morning hours of November 13, 1963 while investigating a commercial burglary.
Among those planning to be in attendance will be the officers' widows, Mary Ellen Binegar-Lynch and Lois Ogan.
