Operation ReLeaf is a program to help Alliant Energy customers save energy in their homes using trees to provide shade during the summer and windbreaks during the winter. This year's program is provided by a partnership with Alliant Energy, Iowa DNR Forestry Bureau, and the City of Grinnell and is an opportunity for area residents to purchase trees that retail for $65.00 or more for only $25.00.
For maximum energy efficiency, plant shade trees within 30 feet of the east and west of your home. Evergreens should be planted as a windbreak on the north and west of your home. Before placing an order, it is highly recommended to use the iTree design tools, which uses Google Earth to show you the best placement for your tree to reduce energy usage. Plant a diverse mix of trees on your property and in your neighborhood to reduce the possibility of losing a large number of trees due to forest health threats.
To order a tree, download the application, complete, print, and mail it to the City of Grinnell (520 4th Avenue) with your check payable to the City of Grinnell. You may order up to two trees and are encouraged to order early to insure you get your first choice of species. Even if you don't live in Poweshiek County, you are welcome to purchase a tree as long as you are an Alliant Energy customer. Orders must be submitted prior to Oct. 12, 2018. Species may sell out prior to that date.

250 trees are available for purchase. Shade trees are five to eight feet tall in seven to ten-gallon containers. Conifers and ornamentals are three to five feet tall in five to seven-gallon containers. Attend a short, free workshop to learn the best way and place to plant a tree. The workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. on pickup day. To register, send an email to gabriele.edwards@dnr.iowa.gov and let her know you would like to attend the Grinnell workshop.
