[ARCHIVED] Fire Damages Building in Downtown Grinnell

The El Molcajete restaurant in the 900 block of Main Street was damaged by fire early Monday morning. The fire was reported around 6:00 a.m. The fire was visible coming through the roof when firefighters responded. A large air handler on the roof was in danger of falling through the roof to the main floor as firefighters made their initial assessment and this prevented access to the interior of the building early in an effort to extinguish the fire. The most extensive damage was in the attic crawl space. Fire walls in the building helped to prevent the spread of the fire; however smoke did travel into other buildings in the area. The restaurant had no fire suppression system but the building immediately to the south and the Strand Theater to the north do have fire suppression systems. This provided some assurance that those systems would aid in the containment of the fire had it spread.
