A rental inspection program was established and approved by the city council in May of this year. The program includes all rental properties used for residential purposes, including motels, hotels, and bed & breakfasts. Registrations of residential rental properties will be accepted starting August 1st. Information sessions on the program will be held in September.
The first step in launching the program will be registration of properties. All owners (or their designee) will need to submit a registration form for each property used for residential purposes. The forms can be found on the Building and Planning department's rental inspection program web page. The online form will accept up to five property addresses while the paper form (by download) will accept one address. Beginning August 1st of 2019 through July 31st of 2020 the registration fee will be waived to encourage property owners to register their properties. After this one year grace period, all new registrations will cost $10.00 per unit.
Information sessions to review the program and to answer questions are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10th at 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 12th at 5:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held at City Hall in the Council Chambers (520 4th Avenue). All owners and/or property managers of rental properties that fall under this program are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
For more information on the program, including an outline of the inspection portion of the program, see the rental inspection program web page. Those with questions that are unable to attend one of the information sessions should call Director of Building & Planning, Tyler Avis, at 641-236-2600 or e-mail tavis@grinnelliowa.gov.
