Do I need a permit for a fence and what are the guidelines for new fences?
A permit is required to build a fence. All fences must meet visibility requirements and the better appearing side must face your neighbor's property. The height cannot exceed 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet in the rear and side yards. Fences must be placed on your property such that it can be maintained without trespassing. Contact the Building & Planning Department at 641-236-2600 for further visibility requirements.
