Billy Robinson Field is located approximately 2 miles south of the center of Grinnell just off of State Highway 146.  Situated only ½ mile north of I-80 and near Grinnell's industrial area, makes the airfield an important asset to the City of Grinnell and to many other central Iowa communities.

Our Airport supports several corporate and recreational aviation activities.  Whether just curious or business minded, stop by and say hello!

See http://www.airnav.com/airport/KGGI for information of interest to pilots landing at Grinnell Regional Airport.

Billy Robinson

Grinnell has a rich aviation heritage beginning with our own Billy "The Birdman" Robinson, an early pioneer of aviation.

Billy Robinson 1884-1916

Billy helped found the Grinnell Aeroplane Company.  He, and partner Charles Hink, devised many aeronautical innovations well ahead of their time.  The Aeroplane Company met its demise with Billy on an early spring day in 1916.

Grinnell's first public airport opened in 1929 and was dedicated with an air show and a special issue of a First Day Cover letter.  This "modern" airport contained the first aviation weather reporting station in the Midwest.

Manned by Ernest Nibeck, this weather station was the center link, truly the "Golden Spike" of the first transcontinental airway.  This airway is still used by pilots flying cross-country today.  The original radio shack still stands but has been moved to a location just east of Montezuma Iowa and is currently used as a family dwelling.
