The City of Grinnell accepted bids for the reconstruction of 8th Avenue from West Street to just east of Park Street and awarded the contract to Manatts, Inc., Brooklyn, IA. This project will be a complete reconstruction of the street with new concrete, similar to the reconstruction of 10th Avenue not too long ago.
The street will be removed with intersections remaining in place as long as possible. Other than street removal and replacement, new storm sewer will be installed as will water services from Main Street to Park Street for the homes on the north side of the street. Homes on the south side had new water services installed when the water main on the south side was constructed a few years ago. Also included in this work will be updating ADA ramps at the intersections of Main and Broad.
City staff held a preconstruction meeting with the contractor for this project and the anticipated start date is at the end of May. This is a change from the previously reported start of mid-April. City staff and the contractor will be holding progress meetings every other week and follow-up information will be posted to the City’s website. Main and Broad Streets will remain open to north-south traffic as long as possible and then close to traffic until the project is complete. West and Park Streets will remain open throughout the project.
