City crews will begin flushing water mains the week of April 14th starting at 6AM. Rusty water is likely to occur throughout the City. The Water Treatment Plant will be the base of operations. City crews generally start at the water plant and work their way south. After that they work the West side of town, then the East side, and end up at the water plant again.
The purpose of hydrant flushing is to remove accumulations of rust and sediment from the City’s water mains and to check the function of hydrants. Although flushing will occur in specific areas, colored water may show up in all areas of the City. If water is discolored flush the cold line until clear. Do not flush hot water if you notice colored water.
Colored water may impact washing laundry. If laundry does get stained domestic products are not usually effective in removing this stain. Do not dry stained laundry. A material, which is usually effective in removing stain, is available at the Water Treatment Plant or the City Offices. This material does not work well if stained laundry has already been dried. Persons doing laundry are encouraged to check the water before beginning the washing cycle. You may also check in with the water department to see if they are near your area.
Best practice to clear your water service, is to wait until flushing in your area has subsided then run cold water until clear.
