[ARCHIVED] Rusty Water Possible During Water Tower Project

The interior of the water tower is being repainted. While this work is performed five hydrants throughout the city will be opened to serve as pressure relief valves. Water anywhere from a small trickle to a full stream will be coming out of the hydrants. This is done to prevent the water system from building up too much pressure. Too much pressure can cause water main breaks.

The hydrants are located at:

  • 2nd Avenue & Main Street - Waterplant
  • 1500 Block of 3rd Avenue
  • Curve of Zimmerman Drive
  • Intersection of Jewel Drive & Spaulding Lane
  • 8th Avenue & Sunset Street - Aquatic Center

Although hydrants will be open in specific areas, red water problems may show up in all areas of the city. When hydrants are opened it creates unusual flow patterns pulling water from different directions and picking up rust and sediments in the process.

There is no known danger in human consumption of rusty water, but it can discolor clothes in laundry. Domestic products are not usually effective in removing this stain but a material, which is usually effective in removing stain, is available at the City Offices. Persons doing laundry are encouraged to check the water before beginning the washing cycle.

Painting of the water tower is projected to last four weeks.
