How can I tell if I have a water leak inside my home?: If you have a newer gallon meter there is a leak detector on the meter. It is a red triangle in the center of the top of the meter. It should not be turning unless someone or something is using water at the time. If it is indicating usage when there shouldn't be any, you should contact your plumber to determine the source of the leak.

1. What portion of the water distribution system is the propery owner's responsibility?: The property owner is responsible for all service pipes up to and including the connection to the water main. Typically this includes the pipes from inside the building out to the middle of the street. Water Service Diagram

3. Will water department personnel help me determine if I have a leak?: Yes, the water department offers complementary leak checks. Contact city staff at 641-236-2600 to set up a leak check.

4. I think my toilet is leaking, how can I check it?: After flushing the toilet add food coloring to the tank after it has stopped running. If the dye comes through to the bowl it indicates a bad flapper or a bad seal.

5. I plan to use a substantial amount of water outside, can I get credit on the sewer charges for this water?: Yes, provided you obtain an outside water meter from the water department prior to using the water. There is a $20 charge for use of the meter. At the current rates 400 cubic feet of water needs to be used to cover the $20 charge. 400 cubic feet is roughly equal to 3000 gallons.
