Water Service Line Survey

  1. To address the potential for lead in drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has required that all water systems in the U.S. create and maintain an inventory of water service lines and their materials. You can help the City of Grinnell's Water Department by taking this quick survey about your water service lines. An accurate inventory will allow us to focus our resources efficiently.

  2. Find your water service line by finding your water meter (likely in your basement) and look at the pipe that comes through your wall, floor, or foundation.

  3. Two examples of water meters with pipes, one meter with a lever, one with a knob shut off
  4. A chart showing the different types of water line and how to identify materials
  5. How to identify your service line material:

Galvanized: a dull silver-gray color. Use a magnet—strong magnets will typically cling to galvanized pipes.

Copper: the color of a copper penny, a magnet will not stick to the pipe.

Plastic: usually white, rigid pipe that is joined to water supply piping with a clamp—note, the pipe can be other colors, including blue or black. A magnet will not stick to the pipe.

Lead: a dull, silver-gray color that is easily scratched with a coin. Strong magnets will not cling to lead pipes.

  6. What material is your current water service line made of?*
  7. Has your water line ever been made of lead?*
  8. Answer unknown if you don't know.
